Palms together in gratitude to Mama Makeda for sharing this praktis with me initially during Winter souls+us 2011.

Spoke with Shirley P. intuitive this weekend and certain things were shared about the upcoming job situation. While I will take into account what she has said, am energizing for myself to stay on board safely through budget crisis, while at the same time actively moving to new foundations and areas of work — dharma work! I don’t know what that will look like, and if this is the final year at work (at least in this form) then MAY IT BE SO for the NEW ADVENTURE TO ARISE.

A great deal in the midst. Much to digest and move through with my breath, praktis and knowing that ALL IS WELL.

Shirley suggested that I write more, journal, even if sporadic. Here I am again on this, not even bothering to look at when the last post was, but returning again…honoring the 3 energy in me (numerology) and acknowledging a bit more the forms of expression/communication and how this may be of benefit.

REFLECTION

Day 1 Agni Hotra sunset. I was a bit too fixed on getting all the elements right. Can relax more but overall, either I inhaled too much smoke or I feel a sense of lightness in my mind which feels welcomed. My mind is getting into all the details about storage and procedure and what not and maybe blocking actual physical/mental/spiritual effect since I’m preoccupying myself with the details rather than big picture. All in all though, can’t wait to offer it up again tomorrow!

Class #7: Right Livelihood with Thich Chan Phap Ho and Panelists

Tonight we learn about another step on the Noble Eight Fold Path- Right Livelihood. The way we make a living has an impact on our world and society, but also on us. As we make a living, we are also making ourselves. Tonight’s class discusses the many ways the practice can nourish our work life and allows up to help ourselves, our co-workers and the people we serve all at once. Phap Ho is joined by two panelists from the Order of Interbeing who share about their path of practice and livelihood. We are also reminded that whereever we work, we can aspire to bring kindness to our workplace. As we celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. today, may we all reflect on the work we are doing and how if is serving the Beloved Community and a more compassionate society. Butterflies bring color and joy to your life. Look at them and remember what joy is in your life, if its a lot or a little, it is still joy. They teach us that growth and transformation does not have to traumatic; it can occur gently, sweetly, joyfully. If a butterfly totem has shown up in your life, make note of the most important issues in your life, and see what needs to be changed.

ON SOUL, CHARACTER & CALLING

London: In our culture we tend to think of calling in terms of “vocation” or “career.”

Hillman: Yes, but calling can refer not only to ways of doing — meaning work — but also to ways of being. Take being a friend. Goethe said that his friend Eckermann was born for friendship. Aristotle made friendship one of the great virtues. In his book on ethics, three or four chapters are on friendship. In the past, friendship was a huge thing. But it’s hard for us to think of friendship as a calling, because it’s not a vocation.

London: Motherhood is another example that comes to mind. Mothers are still expected to have a vocation above and beyond being a mother.

Hillman: Right, it’s not enough just to be a mother. It’s not only the social pressure on mothers by certain kinds of feminism and other sources. There is also economic pressure on them. It’s a terrible cruelty of predatory capitalism: both parents now have to work. A family has to have two incomes in order to buy the things that are desirable in our culture. So the degradation of motherhood — the sense that motherhood isn’t itself a calling — also arises

from economic pressure.

London: What implications do your ideas have for parents?

Hillman: I think what I’m saying should relieve them hugely and make them want to pay more attention to their child, this peculiar stranger who has landed in their midst. Instead of saying, “This is my child,” they must ask, “Who is this child who happens to be mine?” Then they will gain a lot more respect for the child and try to keep an eye open for instances where the kid’s destiny might show itself — like in a resistance to school, for example, or a strange set of symptoms one year, or an obsession with one thing or another. Maybe something very important is going on there that the parents didn’t see before.
