Class #7: Right Livelihood with Thich Chan Phap Ho and Panelists

Tonight we learn about another step on the Noble Eight Fold Path- Right Livelihood. The way we make a living has an impact on our world and society, but also on us. As we make a living, we are also making ourselves. Tonight’s class discusses the many ways the practice can nourish our work life and allows up to help ourselves, our co-workers and the people we serve all at once. Phap Ho is joined by two panelists from the Order of Interbeing who share about their path of practice and livelihood. We are also reminded that whereever we work, we can aspire to bring kindness to our workplace. As we celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. today, may we all reflect on the work we are doing and how if is serving the Beloved Community and a more compassionate society. Chen：The year 2012 is a hot topic of discussion in the world. Do you think there is a relationship between this Japanese earthquake and tsunami, nuclear leaking and radiation, and the 2012 Mayan Prophecy?

Grandmaster：This era of civilization which is 12,000 years old today is an earth excavating type of civilization. It is different from other pre-historical eras in human history, because it has caused the most damage to the Earth. The Mayan Prophecy of 2012 refers to the transition of this civilization and a shift in the time space continuum, in which this civilization is ending and a new civilization is dawning. The natural disasters in the past years and the near future are just like the labor pains prior to the birth of a baby. All current natural disasters are a preparation for the incoming of a new higher dimensional civilization. Therefore, we do not need to panic or be frightened in the face of disaster. Panicking will only make the situation worse. Most importantly, we must make our best effort to show our respect to the Universe and the Higher Beings by reducing man-made disasters, such as wars, and environmental damage to the Earth. Man-made disasters are the cause, and natural disasters are the consequence. In an area where there are many man-made disasters, inevitably there will be more natural disasters. No country or individual can escape from this karmic law.

	Transmutation, Dance of Joy The butterfly is the symbol of change, joy and color. It is the symbol of the soul. They remind us that life is a dance, not to take things quite so seriously. They also remind us to get up and move. Dance brings the sweetness of life.

Butterflies bring color and joy to your life. Look at them and remember what joy is in your life, if its a lot or a little, it is still joy. They teach us that growth and transformation does not have to traumatic; it can occur gently, sweetly, joyfully. If a butterfly totem has shown up in your life, make note of the most important issues in your life, and see what needs to be changed.

ON SOUL, CHARACTER & CALLING

London: In our culture we tend to think of calling in terms of “vocation” or “career.”

Hillman: Yes, but calling can refer not only to ways of doing — meaning work — but also to ways of being. Take being a friend. Goethe said that his friend Eckermann was born for friendship. Aristotle made friendship one of the great virtues. In his book on ethics, three or four chapters are on friendship. In the past, friendship was a huge thing. But it’s hard for us to think of friendship as a calling, because it’s not a vocation.

London: Motherhood is another example that comes to mind. Mothers are still expected to have a vocation above and beyond being a mother.

Hillman: Right, it’s not enough just to be a mother. It’s not only the social pressure on mothers by certain kinds of feminism and other sources. There is also economic pressure on them. It’s a terrible cruelty of predatory capitalism: both parents now have to work. A family has to have two incomes in order to buy the things that are desirable in our culture. So the degradation of motherhood — the sense that motherhood isn’t itself a calling — also arises

from economic pressure.

London: What implications do your ideas have for parents?

Hillman: I think what I’m saying should relieve them hugely and make them want to pay more attention to their child, this peculiar stranger who has landed in their midst. Instead of saying, “This is my child,” they must ask, “Who is this child who happens to be mine?” Then they will gain a lot more respect for the child and try to keep an eye open for instances where the kid’s destiny might show itself — like in a resistance to school, for example, or a strange set of symptoms one year, or an obsession with one thing or another. Maybe something very important is going on there that the parents didn’t see before.
